1. DIY stockings to hang on the mantle.
Last year I got the most thoughtful gift from my sister. They were hand-sewn holiday stockings for both my kids, featuring a beautiful red and white pattern and a fluffy inside. We hung them up and enjoyed the look of them all of December. Stockings are a staple for Christmas, and handmade ones make it even more special. You could sew these yourself, or pick out some fabric you like and get a friend or family member to make them for you. It is also possible to use hot glue if you’re not into sewing.
2. DIY garlands
Making garlands for Christmas decor is such a fun and cozy holiday activity. You can use beads, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks, pinecones, etc. Hang them across your mantle for a vintage holiday charm.
3. Add candles
Add candleholders in a variety of heights with white, red or earth coloured candles to your fireplace mantle. Go thrifting for some new candle holders if you don’t already have some at home.
4. Make a garland from foraged evergreen branches
An evergreen garland on top of your fireplace mantle really brings the whole cozy Christmas look together. Of course, you could also purchase a reusable garland to put up each year. But if you feel like making your own, and have a forest or some trees nearby, here’s a great tutorial.
5. Hang string lights with your evergreen garland for even more warmth and coziness
Get some battery-operated string lights to be wrapped around your evergreen garland. It’s an easy way to add a little extra magic to your holiday mantle decor!
6. Put up some pictures or a large mirror
If you already have pictures displayed on your fireplace mantle, consider switching the images to some Christmas themed ones. I personally purchase digital images from Etsy and get them printed for me by a local print shop.
You could also add a large, beautiful mirror to the top of your mantle. Just make sure it is secured so it won’t wall down. I am absolutely in love with vintage-looking brass mirrors like this one.
That’s it! To conclude, there are many ways to make you fireplace mantle look Christmas-ready, even on a budget. DIY garlands, reusing picture frames, thrifting for candle holders… I hope you found some new ideas and inspiration for you DIY fireplace mantle decor this year!
