Are you dreaming of your very own cottage style kitchen? I get you! We are seeing styles like french country cottage becoming more and more popular, and I can see why. These styles radiate a lived-in comfort and warmth that a lot of us are searching for. For years, the minimalistic look has been the most popular design choice, but it seems like this trend is shifting. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and a space where we end up spening many hours. It makes sense to make it a place that feels cozy and inviting. Here are my best tips to achieve that charming country cottage look!

Traditional shaker cabinets
When choosing cabinets, go for the traditional shaker style. A lot of kitchens already have this cabinet style, and all they need are a fresh coat of paint. In our home, we had wooden pine shaker cabinets when moving in. They were the style we wanted, but looked outdated. We ended up painting them a light grey colour, and it turned out so perfect. I will be posting a kitchen reveal soon, but while you wait, check out this gorgeous cottage kitchen from pinterest:
Wooden details in a cottage-style kitchen
When going for the cottage style, include wood in your design choices. It brings an element of nature and warmth to the space. Wooden ceiling beams, a wooden counter top or wooden flooring are all great options. You could even add some wooden open shelves. If you don’t want to make a lot of expensive investments at the moment, you can still bring wooden details into your kitchen. Think wooden cutting boards and kitchen utensils on display!
Porcelain cottage-style farmhouse sink
Ok, so we’ve all seen the farmhouse sink. I really think this is a great kitchen sink option when designing a cottage-style space. It’s elegant and nostalgic at the same time. While being a functional piece in the kitchen, it also serves as a beautiful design element.
Earthy colours
You don’t have to go for neutral colours when designing your cottage kitchen. Colours can certainly look gorgeous, so do what makes you happy. I would, however, go for more muted tones. Blues, greens, greys and browns are all great colour options for the cottage style kitchen. White is also always a great option that stands the test of time without going out of style.
Lamps and lighting sources
Lighting in a kitchen is a huge detail to pay attention to when designing your space. You want to have some kind of overhead lighting source to light up the space in general. You are going to spend hours cooking in this space, so you are going to want to see what you are doing. In addition, adding some beautiful pendant lamps or table lamps can really bring the space together and make it feel cozy and lived in. Display pretty pots and pans
You don’t need to hide everything behind kitchen kabinets in a cottage kitchen. Having pots, pans and utensils on display adds to the charm (As long are they look good of course). I love the look of a brass or metal wall-mounted bar in the kitchen. Use it for hanging pretty mugs, pots and kitchen utensils.
Add some personality to your cottage style kitchen!
Do you know what makes your kitchen extra cozy and special? The fact that you designed it. So go ahead and add some personal touches. Dish towels in your favorite colours. Your favorite plants on a shelf. Framed photos of places you’ve traveled to.. Don’t be afraid to make it personal and have fun. Good luck with your own cottage kitchen design project!
