Embrace the warmth and nostalgia of the holiday season with the charm of cottage-style Christmas decor. As winter arrives, there’s something so magical about infusing your home with the cozy, rustic allure of cottage-inspired decorations. From whimsical touches to natural elements that evoke a sense of tradition, cottage-style decor brings forth an inviting ambiance that reminds us of snug cottages nestled amidst snow-covered landscapes. In this blog post, I share some ways to adorn your space with timeless and heartwarming cottage-themed Christmas decor.
Simplicity is key
Want to achieve that vintage Christmas charm? I have a secret for you: don’t overdo it and make it simple! Our home was originally built in the 1800s. Back then, people didn’t have all the glitter and glam. They decorated with what they had on hand, and they had to be creative with natural materials. Christmas was more about the celebration and the people than the fancy holiday decor. Think real candles, jars filled with treats, homemade wreaths and stars made out of paper. We are lucky enough to have mistletoe growing on our property and I can’t wait to make some beautiful wreaths to hang in a few windows.
Make your fireplace the center of attention
If you are lucky enough to have a fireplace in your home, make it the center of attention this Christmas by decorating it with charming garlands, stockings, candles and vintage, framed photos. In this post I share all my tips on how to make your mantel holiday-ready.
Fill mason jars with festive and decorative treats
Don’t leave the kitchen out when decorating your cottage home for Christmas. Mason jars add a rustic touch to the kitchen. Why not fill some jars with pretty treats to display this year? Candy canes, cinnamon sticks, marshmallows or maybe some homemade cookies?
Layer with blankets and pillows
Nothing screams cozy cottage more than tons of warm blankets and pillows. So, if you want to achieve that warm and cozy Christmas look, add throw pillows and blankets in holiday colours to your chairs and couch. Mix and match with different pattens and textures. I love using checkered patterns for Christmas, but you can use whatever designs you like.
If you know how to crochet, sew or knit, you could even make your own DIY throw pillows and blankets. Handmade pieces are so much more special than store-bought ones, and they can be passed down for generations. I still have some of the table clothes my great grandma made and they hold a very special place in my heart.
Decorate with natural elements
A lot of cottages are located in the countryside, surrounded by trees, fields or forrests. So if you want to make your home feel like an inviting, rural cottage, it makes sense to bring a bit of nature inside. We all do this regardless of style for Christmas anyway. Just think about the Christmas tree! Literally dragging a whole tree into our living room. Try incorperating other natural elements to your decorating as well. Think wood, pinecones, mistletoe, rocks and evergreen brances. In this post, I share a few ideas for eco-friendly holiday decor. Eco-friendly often also means natural. So, win-win!
Have fun with your holiday decor and remember to add some personal touches! Homemade garlands from previous years, or precious items you bring out year after year should definitaly get their space in your holiday cottage decor.
